August 28, 2008 (FinancialWire) Retailer Target (NYSE: TGT) has agreed to pay $6 million in damages to blind plaintiffs who were unable to use the company's online site, in a suit that could potentially cause trouble for retailers such as Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) (Current Market Cap: US$34.81 Bil.) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY)

The damages were awarded to plaintiffs in California unable to use its online site as part of a class action settlement with the National Federation of the Blind, a leading advocacy group for blind people. Under terms of the settlement Target will place $6 million in an interest-bearing account from which members of the California settlement class can make claims.

The issue centers on the Americans With Disabilities Act, a 1990 law that requires retailers and other public places to make accommodations for people with disabilities.

The NFB is working with Amazon as part of an agreement to make the site more user friendly for the blind, but there are continued concerns.
